Asquith Primary School Curriculum Overview

Growing to Succeed – Curriculum Vision

Our curriculum at Asquith Primary School has been designed to have a distinct, individual identity and ethos which reflects our shared values and vision. Our school context is a key driver when planning and implementing our progressive curriculum.

We aim to equip our pupils with independence, resilience and the key skills necessary to succeed in life. Our school ethos ‘Growing to Succeed’ is at the heart of all that we do: we want our children to be motivated to learn, to persevere and aspire to achieve their full potential. Furthermore, we want our pupils to be great communicators, enthusiastic collaborators and to be respectful citizens of the world.

Intent

Our curriculum is underpinned by Five Golden Threads which are interwoven into everything we do:

High Aspirations for all – at Asquith Primary School we set high expectations for all of our children and encourage them to have high aspirations for themselves by exposing them to inspirational role-models and examples of success.

Fostering Resilience – our curriculum builds opportunities for children to experience challenges, building resilience and a positive mindset for lifelong success.

Embedding Key Skills – we have a strong focus on equipping children with the basic skills in Reading, Writing and Maths which are needed for future academic achievement.

Respecting Diversity -  diversity is built into our curriculum, ensuring that children understand the positive contributions that other cultures make to our society and develop into respectful citizens of our diverse world.

Creating Global Citizens – through our curriculum, our children develop a good understanding of the wider world, developing social skills, empathy for others and knowing the important role they will play in the future of our planet.

Both within lessons and as part of wider school activities, we ensure that all our children have the opportunity to grow and succeed by:

  • Ensuring that our curriculum offer is inclusive, comprehensive, and cohesive, and that our curriculum design and teaching are grounded in evidence.
  • Carefully mapping core and foundation subjects (using the National Curriculum as the basis) so that all children end their primary years having mastered a range of concepts, procedures and skills that fuel a thirst for learning, prepare them for future study and develop an understanding of the world in which they live.
  • Offering a curriculum to support sustained mastery in all areas and is a response to what they need, to grow and succeed.
  • Ensuring our children are equipped with the skills to grow and succeed in our ever-changing world.

Implementation

The five golden threads are integrally interwoven in all that we do and are underpinned by the core body of knowledge in each unit being systematically taught, revised, and revisited to ensure that learning is committed to long-term memory.

The focus on ensuring that children grow to success is implemented by:

  • Consistent approaches to learning and behaviour across the school, building a sense of security and routine which supports positive learning behaviours.
  • Opportunities to revisit and embed key skills through collaborative activities, individual practice and intervention.
  • A range of research and recording activities which create many opportunities for children to encounter challenge, master processes and undertake disciplinary pursuits.
  • Subject-specific reading opportunities, which are fundamental to support knowledge acquisition, as well as a route to developing subject-specific vocabulary.
  • A wide variety of experiential and exploratory activities which expose children to ideas and beliefs from cultures around the world, as well as those of our wider community and local area.
  • Regular opportunities for children to work together, developing empathy for others and building social skills which are essential for future success in our diverse world.
  • Opportunities for children to record their learning in a variety of ways including artwork, maps, graphs, music, digitally, writing and drama.
  • Effective assessment which is the key to ensuring our children build knowledge. Every lesson begins with retrieval practice and effective use is made of ongoing assessment to structure future learning and support to ensure every child succeeds and is ready for the next stage of their education.
  • Promotion of physical and mental health – we know that children learn best when they feel safe and happy.
  • Enrichment days which allow children to immerse themselves in a topic, creating deep knowledge and a love of learning.A focus on vocabulary development – vocabulary is explored and discussed in every lesson.
  • Partnership with parents, giving children opportunities to share their learning with parents, carers and the wider community.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is measured through regular work scrutinies, subject specific learning walks, teacher and pupil discussions and data analysis. Our carefully planned and implemented curriculum means that children achieve well, enjoy their lessons and have a wide range of experiences during their time at our school. When they leave our school, children are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, are able to make a positive contribution to their community and have the ambition, respect, resilience, skills and tenacity to face the ever-changing world of the future.
