Early Years Foundation Stage at Asquith Primary School

Foundation Stage: Nursery and Reception

Your child is at a crucial stage in their development with research showing that children learn more rapidly in the first seven years of life than at any other time.

In Nursery and Reception, the children follow the Foundation Curriculum linked to Early Learning Goals which develop a range of concepts and skills planned under key areas of learning.

Learning in Foundation Stage is very much child led. This means that their learning comes through their play and the questioning and imagination that they are keen to explore. We encourage this love and thirst for knowledge by developing exciting areas in which the children can investigate, make believe and develop a whole range of new skills. These areas are also linked to some more formal styles of learning such as phonics recognition, simple number work and mark making/writing.

These learning outcomes form the basis on which the children will build their more formal learning in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Communication and Language

This involves developing your child’s speaking, listening and attention skills. There are opportunities to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This involves helping your child to develop a positive sense of themselves and others whilst forming strong relationships and respect for others. They will learn how to manage their feels and understand appropriate behaviour.

Physical Development

This involves developing your child’s gross and fine motor skills. Opportunities to improve coordination, control and movement are given both indoors and outdoors. They will learn about a healthy lifestyle.

Literacy

This involves encouraging your child in link sounds and letters to begin reading and writing. Opportunities to read and listen to adults read are given every day. We are passionate about all children reading for enjoyment.

Mathematics

This involves providing children with opportunities to develop their number skills, problem solving

and understanding of shape, space and measures. We use White Rose Maths.

Understand the World

This involves helping your child make sense of the world around them and their community. They will explore the past and present as well as the natural world; making observations and finding out about people.

Expressive Arts and Design

This involves developing your child’s creative side with different materials and media as well as giving opportunities for being imaginative. This includes art, music, dance, role play and design technology.
