Topics
These are the topics we learn about and the books we love reading in Reception.
At the start of each half term we share a newsletter and a parent friendly plan which gives more information about what we are learning in Reception.
Our topic is about starting school. We learn to talk about our feelings and the 4 Zones of Regulation. We also learn about each other by looking at our All About Me sheets and talking about our families and what we enjoy doing.
Once we are settled in our new classroom we begin our topic, The Three Little Pigs. We have fun making houses for the three little pigs. We learn songs about the three little pigs and have fun singing these songs to our parents. We also learn about what houses were like in the past.
To finish our topic we read a different version of the traditional tale, The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig!
Our topic is how to be healthy. We learn about making healthy choices in what we eat and drink. When reading the story Oliver's Vegetables we learn about different vegetables and design our own vegetable patch.
After reading the books Oliver's Fruit Salad and Oliver's Milkshake we have fun following instructions to make a delicious fruit smoothie.
To end the half term we learn about Easter and look for signs of Spring!

At the start of this half term we learn about Diwali, the Festival of Light.
On Bonfire Night we find out about people who help keep us safe. We enjoy using the Topsy and Tim meet the... books to learn about the different people who help us in our local community.
We also enjoy reading the story, The Little Red Hen and have fun following instructions to make our own bread. We all help to make the bread, unlike the animals in the story!
In December we join our Nursery friends and sing Christmas songs and Christmas number rhymes to our parents.
We start this term celebrating St George's Day and learning about the patron Saint of England.
After that our topic is farm animals and learning about a contrasting locality to where we live in Morley. We enjoy a visit from farmer Richard and his farm animals. We learn the names of baby animals and the produce we get from farm animals.
We enjoy retelling the story, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and have fun working in our teams to make a bridge for the goats.
Our topic is Owls. We have an exciting online visit with different types of owls from SMJ Falconry and learn that not all owls are nocturnal! We learn about the life cycle of an owl and have fun dissecting an owl pellet. We read fiction and non-fiction books about owls.
In the Spring term we go to the Alhambra Theatre with the rest of school to see the Pantomime. We have the best time on our first ever school trip!
We also learn about Chinese New Year and how people celebrate.
In the last half term, we have fun reading different Supertato stories.
We engage in Science investigations about freezing and explore different materials. We work in our teams to make a trap for the Evil Pea and make Wanted posters to put around school.
Also in this half term we visit the Year 1 classrooms and meet our new teacher. We enjoy spending time in our new classrooms so that we are confident to start Year 1 in September.
Finally, we plan an end of year party to celebrate our achievements in our first year of school!
