The Nest

We believe that every child has the right to achieve, belong and thrive within their mainstream classroom. ‘The Nest’ is an intervention space which aims to remove barriers to learning through timely, targeted support that enables pupils to access an ambitious curriculum alongside their peers.

The Nest is not an alternative to high-quality classroom teaching but an integral part of our inclusive approach. Through careful assessment, we identify the precise gaps in knowledge, skills and learning behaviours that prevent pupils from making expected progress. We provide focused interventions in English and Maths, alongside support to develop the resilience, independence and self-regulation needed for successful learning.

Children who access The Nest are identified through ongoing classroom assessment, termly standardised tests and Pupil Progress discussions. Those working below the level of their year-group curriculum are targeted for interventions focussing on the foundational skills which will support them to access classroom learning. In addition, Leaders monitor behaviour and pastoral records to identify children who require additional support with learning behaviours and these children access interventions which focus on the skills needed to be successful learners in the classroom environment.

Our interventions are purposeful, time-limited and responsive to individual need. We use pre-teaching to equip pupils with the vocabulary, concepts and prior knowledge required for future learning, ensuring they return to the classroom ready to engage with whole-class teaching. Every session is designed with the clear intention of maximising pupils' success in their mainstream classroom, rather than creating dependence on additional provision.

We continually assess the impact of our support, adapting provision so that it remains responsive and effective. By working collaboratively with class teachers, families and other professionals, we ensure that learning in The Nest complements classroom practice and contributes to a coherent, inclusive approach to learning.

Our vision for The Nest reflects the principles of inclusive education: high expectations for every pupil, identification of barriers, targeted intervention and a focus on enabling all children to participate and flourish within the life of the school.
